The main attraction in Siemp Reap is most definitely the famous temples of Angkor Wat, situated just outside of the main city.

The Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, and is considered as one of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. Being able to witness one of the Wonders of the World, I was in awe with the structure of the unique one of a kind temples.

Built around the 9th century, the Angkor Wat temples was marked as the capital of the Khmer Empire. However, by the 12th century, it became a Buddhist Temple dedicated to Vishnu. The monument remains a Buddhist Temple up until today.

Clothing

Given that the monument is a Buddhist Temple, it is important that Angkor Wat has a strict dress code that must be abided by every single visitor. Those dress code includes: not wearing any clothing that would reveal any parts of the shoulder or knees. On a more personal note, from one traveler to another, it is best you wear light clothing along with some good walking shoes because the scorching heat of the sun can truly drain the energy in you and it requires you to do a lot of walking!

With that being said, make sure to bring some sun cream, shades / hat that you can use to cover up and avoid sun burn! Do not forget to pack a good amount of cold water (or warm, it is your preference) to stay hydrated!

Exploring the Temples

I will never forget the moment I first explored the complex of the temples of Angkor Wat. Being able to witness with my own eyes the amazing architectural designs of the monuments was truly an experience that I will cherish for a long time. Entering the complex, I truly understand how the Cambodians embraced their past regardless of how difficult it may have been for them.

Walking through the temples, I realized one thing – it felt like a jungle. On one part of the complex, it felt as if I was walking in the middle of nowhere as if I was in the jungle. The roots were lifted up above the ground, the trees were covering the reflection of the sun. It was like a ruin. Although it may not sound as enticing, being in that said area, I felt as if I was in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Rider (fun fact: the movie was also filmed here!) Although, being someone who is easily paranoid, I also felt the paranoia slowly creeping up to me because I was worried that debris would fall out of nowhere.

this point, I was already exhausted by the heat and the never-ending walking, every now and then I’d have to climb a couple of nerve-racking stairs – I felt so drained. But the sights of every monument I entered brought me in awe and made me forget the tiredness that I felt.

To add, the sights are best to see and take pictures of when the sun shines directing towards the temples. The local guide will definitely mention how to take a wonderful picture of Angkor Wat !

My overall experience within the complex of Angkor Wat may have be exhausting but the sights and the marvelous picturesque areas made up for the tiring day ! It is an experience that every traveler must try at least once in their life!

Thank you, Profil Holidays, for making my experience in the famous Angkor Wat a memorable one.
