Odisha, India embraces its culture and historical features that dated for centuries old. There are a lot to explore in Odisha and few of those are the temples and caves.
The ambience of every visit into the temples and caves brought out an aura that lifted my spirit.
The unique part of the historical sites of Odisha is that these monuments are situated in the rural area of the state – which, in my opinion, was quite fun and invigorating!
1. Dhauli
If you are a historical enthusiast, then it is without doubt that you are aware of the importance of Dhauli and its past.
Dhauli is the place where Kalinga War took place. It is considered to be one of the most intense wars in the Indian history. After the war took place, King Ashoka changed his beliefs and adopted Buddhism. This is why there is a sign of the religion of Buddhism within the vicinity.
In short, it is a historical place wherein either those who believe in the Lord Buddha tend to visit frequently, otherwise it is those who come to appreciate unique and detailed artworks or carvings. The front shape of the monument showcases an elephant – a sign of Buddhism, to spread the message of peace and brotherhood.
2. Sun Temple
One of the finest Hindu temples in the entire country, this 13th century temple is filled with exceptional carvings, scenic landscape and ruins which will make every second of your visit unforgettable.
Given the size of the temple, it will take quite some time to thoroughly walk through every corner of the monument – but, every second of it will be worth your time. This is because the area houses different statues and structures, which are connected with its ancient history.
The first thing you will notice as you enter is the Lion Colossi, considered to guards of the staircases leading to the main temple porch, however it was relocated and now serves as an opening factor for the visitors.
Next would be the Bhoga Mandpa, believed to be a dance hall with festive carvings depicting a couple of dancers and musicians.
On the side would be the Sundial, known to be a treasure trove of secrets in ancient India. As a matter of fact, people still use it to tell time.
Given the size of the temple, there are a lot of things to discover as you visit the complex; after all, what’s the point if I spoil all the historical fun, right? 3. Khandagiri and Udayagi Caves
For some starts, let us determine the etymology of these words – Udayagiri means “Sunrise Hill” and consists of 18 caves while Khandagiri consists of only 15 caves.
The Khandagiri and Udayagi Caves are manmade caves which were built in the 2nd century, during the period of Mahameghavahana Dynastry, ruled by King Kharavela. It consists of natural and artificial structures that hold religious, historical and archeological importance. It is said the that Jain and Buddhist monks used to meditate in the caves.
From the view below, the cave itself is already magnificent! Hike for a bit and upon reaching the top, the view is phenomenal! And while you make your way to the top, be sure to look and admire each and every cave along the way. Truly a jaw-dropping experience for me!
Odisha, India offers many features to their visitors – whether they are cultural enthusiasts, environmental enthusiasts or even historical enthusiasts, I believe that it is important that every adventurer experiences the history and culture of the locals of Oshida to properly understand their way of life. Discovering the caves around the state truly lifted my spirit, something that I will forever be grateful for. Not to mention that I also learned a lot during each visit!
