Traveling Independently As A Woman

I went on my first solo trip in my early twenties. It was actually unplanned; my supposed to be travel buddy had an emergency so I had to travel alone. I spent two weeks in Australia traveling by land and air. To tell you the truth, I was flying by the seat of my pants. I was young, naive, had social fears and anxiety. I am sharing this with you so that you could understand how extremely scared I must have been during that time. I remembered praying with eagerness hoping that my travel buddy would suddenly appear or follow after a few days. Although, it seemed as if God had better plans for me. He wanted me to see the world in my own eyes as an individual traveler – that the world is a magical, challenging, and fascinating place worth every penny of your traveling experience.

Most importantly, I shouldn’t have to be intimidated by it!

You’re probably wondering where am I headed? – Australia. One of the most popular destinations for solo travelers— filled with friendly people, a ton of opportunities to meet new individuals who can end up being a friend, and a relatively safe place to travel alone.

I learned that the most important thing to take with you is common sense.  Of course, there are a lot of tops & tricks that you should know as a solo traveler but I’ll be giving you some of my utmost important ones that I’ve learned.

  1. It is best to pick a city or region that has low crime and is considered “safe” for female travel.
  2. Be confident, smart, and informed.
  3. Be safe—use your basic street smarts, be assertive, and keep your valuables close and hidden.
  4. Research before you go—weather, local customs, dress codes, etiquette, etc. Make sure you know the basics of what to expect before you step off the plane.
  5. Enjoy— enjoy the city, enjoy the sights and the entirety of the tourism industry; make the most of the trip and enjoy it to your fullest.

Ever since my first independent trip, I have gained the confidence in myself to do it again and of course, I learned to enjoy solo traveling more and more every time.
I’ve found myself traveling to different cities around the world more often. Whether it’s in Asia or Europe – each destination has something unique to offer.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, I went on a week-long journey to India – where I got to witness their incredible architecture, celebrated their colorful and bright festivals. I couldn’t miss on learning more from the locals and connecting with their spiritual aspect.

I’ve also spent the winter in France, where I visited some vineyards and chateaus (castles), crossing countries using only their train networks.

I, for one, am lucky to have found the perfect travel agency that has helped me in all my travel needs. Profil Holidays made sure everything was taken care of when I got to my destination; they assisted me in getting the cheapest yet safest hotel accommodation in the city center, the flights, and train tickets. For sure, Profil Holidays, has given me a memorable, smooth experience all throughout.

As a woman traveling alone, I’ve experienced the good and, on occasion, the bad. Although, I think it’s inevitable, traveling alone as a woman presents several dangers. Every day has unforeseen events, the hazards of life that come at you unexpectedly – you’re bound to encounter a couple wherein you’d have to learn by yourself in terms of handling/adjusting to it.

I am sure that at least once in your life you have faced a new situation for which you were not prepared.

A wise and memorable saying got me through it as well, “Life itself is dangerous, but that’s no reason to stop breathing.”

Don’t let your fears of safety, thoughts of being lonely, or concerns of getting stranded stop you from discovering yourself and the world. Because once you overcome the fear, it will give you a feeling of fulfillment. You will be able to overcome those fears and realize that the world is not as threatening as we are told.

We, women, can travel proudly without fear.

So if you’re finding yourself doubting but eager to travel, this is your sign.

I assure you traveling can expand your perspective and empower your sense of self.
